Home - MOT 2005 - Moose Hunt

The Friday evening Moose Hunt will depart the Town and Country Inn at 6:30 p.m. Sunset is 8:30 p.m. This will allow enough time to cruise our preferred Moose viewing road before dark settles. Our destination will be Route 16 in Berlin, NH. Two way radios should be set to channel 7.0

To get to Berlin:

  • Turn left out of the Town and Country onto Route 2
  • Take Route 2 through down town Gorham.
  • At the Route 2/Route 16 junction bear right onto Route 16 towards Berlin. It's about 6 miles to Berlin from here.

When in Berlin we will follow Route 16 North to the town of Errol. Route 16 follows the west bank of the Androscoggin River. It's about 30 miles give or take a tenth from Berlin to Errol. Hopefully we'll see moose along this stretch of road. If we do and are able to spend time viewing it will most likely be wise to head back to Gorham from Errol.

While driving Route 16 please keep within reasonable speed limits. You may come upon a moose and want to hit the binders pretty quickly. Most often they will be along the side the road foraging or right on the road edge licking the gravel where they gain a good portion of their salt intake. Please don't rev your engines or honk your horns. We'll try to be reasonably quiet so they aren't scared away. Be mindful when parking along the road side as we don't want any MINIs to get stuck in soft gravel or sand. Also, if you feel the need to get out of your car for photos please look before opening your door onto the roadway. If we have the good fortune to view some moose, please, please do not try to get close. Moose can be unpredictable and they can run 35 miles per hour. Can you?

Some may choose to continue on from Errol to Dixville via Route 26. Route 26 is often a great place to view moose. Errol to Dixville is 11.5 miles.

From Dixville you can head back to Gorham at your own leisure.

Dusk is the preferred time to view moose. Sighting success is greater in the evening than early morning. Of course there is no guarantee that we'll see any, but we'll have a nice evening drive anyway.
